Sorry it's been so long since I have last written! I have been so busy lately! You would think that being in a village there wouldn't be a lot to do... yeah right!
I got to work today at 7:30 a.m. didn't leave until 6:30 and then had a birthday party to go to in the village! When I got home I was beat.
Today our power went out twice! That's life in the village... The first time was while our seventh graders were in the middle of MAP testing :-( Poor guys... I think they may have had to restart the test. I did take the opportunity to show them part of Ice Age. The power was out for a good half an hour/forty-five minutes so we were able to watch a good portion of it. It was such a treat for them. They NEVER get to watch movies at school. After seeing all the movies that were shown in some of the schools in the lower 48 I was kind of relieved to know that they don't get to watch movies often at school. The power went out a second time, I was in the middle of a meeting with my Alaska State Mentor, and by then it was already habit to find my cell phone, turn on the flashlight and continue with the meeting. LOL!
I was extremely touched when my students in my 3rd hour skills lab (there are only 4 juniors, all of whom are girls) asked me if we could find time to study for the HSGQE (high school exit exam for all students in Alaska). They are going to be tested in October and really want to pass it. I of course couldn't say no to them wanting to practice math!
We started after school club yesterday and I'll be running it with Mike every Wednesday and every other Thursday. We do homework help and remediation for an hour and then something fun (yearbook, photography, art) for another hour. So we are at school until 6:30 or so. It actually doesn't seem like we are there that long. Usually by the end of the day I am amazed when we dismiss because I have been so busy all day I don't realize the day has flown by. So far about a quarter of our students have been showing up but it's nice to be able to spend time with them outside of the classroom. I am still amazed that our students are so well behaved and that we have so few discipline problems.
The birthday party was fun. It was nice to get into the village and be able to eat without having to cook. There was moose and fish and cake! Yum!
The past two days at school have been so busy! On Monday, the principal observed me teaching, my mentor came, our students MAP tested, and the social worker came. On Tuesday, the mentor and social worker was still here, the PT came, and so did the psychologist. No one realized that we are in the middle of a remodel and don't have anywhere to house our own staff during school, let alone a bunch of support staff so I ended up giving my office (closet) to the psych and the social worker had to use the library and mentor moving from room to room. I was running around like crazy trying to keep track of everyone and make sure everyone had a place to test/evaluate and trying to teach my classes at the same time! It all worked out in the end though. I was a little relieved when everyone left today :-)
