New Experiences

I have tried so many interesting foods throughout my time here.  Just when I think that I have tried most of them I am introduced to a new gambit of food.  Lacy text me again asking if I wanted to try some native food.  Of course the answer was yes!  The answer is always Yes!  I headed over to her house where she made me... yes, made just for me... boiled fish, mouse food, oily fish, and salmon berries.

She boiled some smelt and some tomcods so I could try them both and decide which I liked best.  It turned out that I liked the tomcods the most.  Lacy wanted me to try the boiled fish with seal oil on it.  I have come to discover that seal oil has a VERY potent smell, it resembles something that has been fermented, but the taste is good.  It was difficult for me to get past the smell though when eating the boiled fish.

With the boiled fish we had mouse food.  And yes... it is what it sounds like.  It is a mouses food.  You can actually find a mouse burrow and you take the food that you find in there that the mouse has been collecting for the winter.  There are a few types of mouse food that you can find.  The ones that we had are teardrop shaped and are a root.

Lacy's husband came in from outside to have some oily fish which is herring that has been dried and then soaked in seal oil.  It was difficult to get past the smell of the seal oil but I was glad that I did because I really liked the taste and texture of the dried fish.
